June 6-13, 2007
Hi everyone! Welcome to "the Hard Hat Zone"
This is the place on the FUS website for up-to-date information on the various building related projects on-going at 900 University Bay Drive. Like our building, this site is in flux. Drop by regularly.
Building
Project
Summary (as of 6-7-07):
Building Project
A Wing
Asbestos abatement is complete and the containment plastic is down. A major surprise was finding that each room had been lined with an additional gypsum board wall at some time now lost to memory. The best guess is that it was for sound reduction. The original ceiling lights are disappointing; they are off-the-shelf, not FLW custom design. The wall framing is unique in using 2 x 4s on their short axis. My guess is that they figured the Transite wallboard would provide enough stiffness. The Staff had noted excellent sound transmission sound transmission between rooms. I think this construction fostered that.
B Wing
There upper B Wing is currently in containment because of…asbestos! "The Miracle Fiber" was found in the joint compound. This should all be down by the weekend. The staff has been gracious about temporarily losing the use of the B Wing bathrooms.
C Wing
On Monday, June 11, deconstruction begins in earnest. The roof, stones and framing lumber will be salvaged. Then the backhoe comes in to finish the Job.
Restoration
Summary (as of 6-7-07):
We are looking at electrical bids, and we are contacting a firm in Milwaukee to manufacture new rings for the lights, so there will only be one size. The current count is six different styles of light rings. Now that the asbestos is gone, is done, we can get some paint probes to determine the historic color. We can’t just use the original manufacturer’s formula, because in those days all paints contained lead.
Parking
Summary (as of 6-7-07)
The “parking team” is continuing to prepare for the day when the construction fence goes up, and the number of parking stalls in the FUS lot goes down. Our chief concern is that members of our community who would really benefit from parking in the FUS lot feel comfortable requesting a permit. Also, if you have DMV handicapped tags for your car then you may automatically park anywhere in the FUS lot during construction without any additional permits. Wendy Cooper is happy to talk with anyone who has questions about parking. She can be reached 233-9774 ext 125.
Other Notes
On another note, we need volunteers to assist with parking beginning June 17. As we adjust to a new parking plan, we want to insure that everyone can find the VA lot with ease, and that questions can be quickly answered. We will have teams of three volunteers at each Sunday service to perform those functions. Please consider signing up to be on our list of Sunday worship parking volunteers. You can contact Alice Delaquess at aliced@fusmadison.org or 233-9774 ext 116 to indicate your interest in helping either this summer or come fall.
