Pithy Construction News from"Beacon Street West” (FUS)
for June 27 to July 5, 2007
The trailer shakes a bit every time the giant back-hoe goes by, and prompts me to grab my camera. Much of the action today has been in the street, as they reroute traffic while installing a 2 new fire hydrants on the campus. I was at GA, and when I came back, the Gathering Room was gone, and the rest neatly wrapped in plastic. Farewell, old girl. Bring on the new crossing!

Preservation
Tuesday we held interviews to hire a preservation architect. We find that many preservation questions do not have a clear answer, such as, ”What is the best light bulb choice when the original is no longer made?” We want to have an established relationship with a professional preservationist whom we can consult when thorny questions arise. We are consulting roofing experts to deal with the Awing leaks but we need to strengthen the roof before we can heave crew up there. This will change the ceiling height of the Loggia offices, requiring State Historical Society approval.
Construction
Pat Cocroft divining for water mainsin U-Bay Drive. Yes, he did find it.
We will have two fire hydrants on our campus. This week we dug a hole in University Bay Drive and tied into the water main. This needed to be done before the repaving (Hooray!) of University Bay in early July. The electrical inspector is refusing to allow the non-code (it was allowable in1964) wiring in the B-wing, so more drywall with asbestos in the joints must come down. The abatement workers install a portable shower with triple asbestos filters on the drains and change and shower before leaving the containment area.
Volunteer!
Do you want to help with some some hard (but important) work? Join me and "The Stone Chippers" Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. We intend to reuse the stone that we are removing, but it must be free of mortar first. I have supply of gloves and goggles, and a few hammers. Bring any other implements you think would be useful. - David Weber
Connections
We continue to welcome new parking crew members, as we help members and visitors manage our smaller parking lot during construction. Contact Alice Delaquess at aliced@fusmadison.org to join the crew.
Parking
Kudos to all of you for adjusting your parking practices with such grace. We are trying our best to provide useful information about who can park in the FUS and where the alternative parking locations can be found during Worship. Here are a few tips for this week:
-- If you are attending a meeting or event at FUS during non-worship periods, please use the FUS lot. The only restriction on the FUS lot during the week, on Saturdays and on Sundays after worship is the number of available stalls (about 40). Drop by the office for a Temporary Parking Permit or look for one in the next newsletter. If parking runs out in the FUS lot then please park on the street along Marshall Court and follow the posted restrictions.
-- Please note that there are people who are not associated with FUS who like to use our lot while they go to the hospital etc. We are being much, much stricter about limiting that “unauthorized use” of our lot. So, it is possible that someone might ask you why you are parking in the FUS lot. If you are in the lot to attend something at FUS – you are ok.
-- FUS groups that are using the Annex this summer should park in the FUS lot and/or Marshall Court and then walk around the prow and through the playground to get to the annex. Only two vehicles may park in the Annex driveway at any time, and we ask that you do not park on Cornell Court.
-- We expect that this will be confusing, that we will forget the changes, and that members may not be aware of the new parking system, and that is ok. We will offer gentle reminders here and there. If you ever have questions, need clarification, or decide that you really need that worship parking permit we welcome your calls. Give Donna Bordwell (extension 110) or Wendy Cooper (ext 125) a call.
That's it for the (moderately) pithy Hard Hat News!
