Pithy Construction News from "Beacon Street West” (FUS) for July 18 - 25, 2007

Greetings from the Meeting House!

Cutting the Floors in the B-wing. Cutting the Floors in the B-wing

Things are clearly headed in the right direction here as the electricians and plumbers and fire protection people are all on the job and getting things installed. We were just visited by a "Ditch Witch" for a few days, which turns out to be machine that digs ditches. She dug near the kitchen and helped the men and women from Nickels Electric install new electrical connections into the historic Meeting House. We now have a fine new stainless steel electric panel in the basement. So we move on, as fast as possible towards our goal. Tawanda!

Forum
Approximately 75 people (by sandwich count) attended Sunday’s Forum.  We discussed the current status of our remodeling/preservation/building project (the lines of demarcation get blurry in some areas). It is a thrill to see our community pulling together to go forward with this important effort. Look for a comprehensive summary of the Forum to be available in the near future.

Building
This week there is much preliminary work going on. Parts of the B wing floor are coming out to allow relocation of electric lines. Plumbing is coming out of the erstwhile janitor’s closet so it can be merged with Scott’s office to form a small meeting room. The roof joist are all “sistered”, and the roof engineers identified leaks at he joint of the old and new roof over the Loggia. They will remove some strips to get more definition of the problem. Next week should see more wiring and duct work and the start of a sprinkler system in the B Wing.

Making way for new electrical lines. Making way for new electrical lines.

Preservation
Next week should see the beginning of light rewiring in the Lobby, followed by resurfacing of the walls. The new surface will be similar to the sand texture of the Auditorium. We will paint some sample wallboards so we can view them in different lights, as well as installing a bank of fluorescents to make sure the color remains true under that light.
