Pithy Construction News from "Beacon Street West” (FUS) for August 15 - 22, 2007

The place is humming. Everyone is busting whatever they can bust to
meet the Meeting House Nursery School start date of September 10th. We
have offered to do whatever we can to get the Nursery School moved back
in, so watch for a call for volunteers once we know more about what needs
to be done.
A Wing
Plastering is complete. We are waiting for it to cure and then it can be painted. I already don’t remember what the old ceiling looks like. The new plaster has a slightly swirly appearance that will disappear when it is painted. The floor has been patched. It will take 28 days for the pigment to mature to its final color. Currently it looks quite off, but there is no dispute that the problem will be corrected if ti persists. The color discrepancy is actuated by the colors of the adjacent floors. The floor by the cabinets is a previous patch with a poor match: too magenta. The original floor on the other side is very worn: too brown. The patch over the sewer pipes in the new triangular conference room is the same pigment and it doesn’t look so bad.
The next step is the Auditorium lights. We are waiting for an engineering opinion before we move in a lift. The scaffold company is recommending the lift, because reaching the Prow would require cantilevering 12’ out from a scaffold. We are going to have the “small” lift, but it is 6 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and 18 feet long. We will need to temporarily remove the Hearth Room door and Window to get it into the building. So much for “Just change the lights”.
B Wing
The new floors are poured. All systems have passed rough inspection, insulation is up, and wallboard is following fast. Findorff has scheduled Saturday work for the finish carpenters to get us back in as soon as possible.
D (Yes D!) Wing
We have samples “Glu-Lam” posts and beams, as well as paints, tile, and counters. The counters and sinks will be polished concrete from a firm in Minnesota, within the 500 mile radius that LEED likes. I haven’t figured quite where to display them, so keep an eye out. We have a design for large sconce lights in the new Auditorium that will incorporate copper from both the original roof and the Lower Meeting House.
Volunteers
The Saturday Morning Chisel Club Continues to meet at 9:00 to clean stone. We also wil need to help the Nursery School move in.
Free Stuff
We have about 20 fluorescent ceiling lights suitable for shop or garage that are available on a first come, first serve basis.
