Up to their ankles in “mud”!

April 16, 2008

Greetings from
"Action Central!"

Things are really jumping at the construction site. The prediction of rain for Thursday creates a list of “must do” items for Wednesday. Because the Plaza Deck is now sealed, all the water from the roof drains to the parking lot, so the excavator wants to get the drywells in ASAP. In case there is any leakage, the Lower Crossing floor (from the bottom up: plastic, Styrofoam, heat tubes , wire mesh, concrete) had to be done Wednesday so that it is solid before the rain.

Sidewalk Superintending

Now that the structure is up, the changes you can see from the walk are more subtle. There is now copper on the north edge of both Auditorium and Upper Crossing roofs. The plaza floor, which was orange plywood, is now coated with tar, then a white membrane, then more tar. Next will be polystyrene insulation, then eventually it will have gravel and stepping stones.
The turquoise pipes by the fence are for storm water, the yellow corrugated hemi-cylinders are for under groundwater retention.

Inside

The big excitement is that the Lower Crossing floor was poured today. There’s something about 35 cubic yards of wet concrete that generates a palpable tension. At one point eight cement finishers were working with precise urgency. It all had to be brought in with power buggies, so they had to pour their way out.

All the ductwork is sealed to keep out dust-part of the internal air quality requirement.   Because of the pine ceiling, much of the mechanicals  (especially ventilation and electricity) are under the floor, so when the floor is done, the bulk of the rough-in is also.
The walls in the classrooms have one side of drywall, they wil be insulated in Monday.

Tours

As long as it is dry, I will lead tours of the building every Sunday between services. Or, If you catch me at FUS, I may be able to show the site.

Volunteers

We are looking for experienced people to lead work crews. The first landscape meeting is Saturday April 19, at 11:00.  We are still coordinating schedules with Findorff, but we are planning to: paint classrooms, terminate data lines, clear the shed areas by the Annex and build a Dumpster enclosure.
