Beyond Our Walls:
Denominational Connections

It’s easy to forget in such a large congregation that we’re part of something much bigger. The work of Unitarian Universalists in our community, district, and denomination is almost as lively! Connecting in at these levels offers a wide range of worship, education, social, and activism experiences to deepen and broaden the spiritual journey. The Denominational Affairs Committee works with the ministers and denominational committees to encourage our members to get involved on a grander scale. Opportunities for involvement, leadership and support abound! You’ll meet new people, with those who share your interests and passions, and help shape the world for the better. Contact Marsha Siik, 698-8952, siik@wisc.edu.

Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC)

Founded in 1939 to help victims of fascism escape from Nazi-occupied Europe, UUSC provides leadership in human-rights advocacy, education, and action in the United States and abroad. It works in partnership with grassroots organizations overseas, concentrating on civil and political rights of indigenous people, women’s health, and reproductive rights, as well as providing emergency relief. Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office

The Social Justice Council is a member of the UU United Nations Office, an official Non-governmental organization (NGO) with the United Nations, and the official delegation from the Unitarian Universalist Association.
The United Nations Office works to engage UUs in the U.S. and Canada on UN efforts like the Millennium Development Goals, UN Reform and U.S. support for the U.N.  For more information please contact Wendy Cooper, wendyc@fusmadison.org.

Partner Church

This committee is part of a national program linking Unitarian Universalist congregations in the United States and Canada with Unitarian and Universalist congregations around the world, primarily in Transylvania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, India, and the Philippines. Partner Church facilitates cultural and educational exchange, as well as financial support, between our congregation and our Partner Church in the Transylvanian village of Nagyajta. There are a variety of activities to help raise our awareness of the heritage we share with our religious kin around the world. The committee meets monthly throughout the year. Watch for the annual Hungarian Dinner each fall! Contact: Marjorie Marion, 233-9104, midsi@aol.com.

Chalice Lighters

When Unitarian Universalists in the Central Midwest District answer the call to help establish a new congregation or assist in a special growth need of an existing congregation, they have “lit a chalice.” First Unitarian Society members can share in providing ongoing funding for expansion efforts through individual donations. Three times a year, Chalice Lighters are invited to contribute $10.00 (or more, should they choose to make a larger contribution) toward a specific grant. Contact: Prudy Stewart, 274-2616, Prudystewart@tds.com.
