Learning to be Green at Our Church
Welcome to the section of the First Unitarian Society of Madison website about our Gold LEED certified addition.
The construction of this notable and rather young part of our campus is a great story in itself - ten years of meetings, committees, more meetings, more committees. Expanding a church campus is a hard thing to do. Expanding a National Historic Landmark designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is another thing altogether!
Yet expand we did, and in this introduction I'd like to acknowledge a few of the heroes of this achivement.
So much of the credit must go to our lay and professional leadership. Four presidents of the Society held sway over the process. Seven or more committess met hundreds of hours. To anyone but a Unitarian-Universalist, it may seem unbelievablly democratic, but we did it and it worked.
Second, we want right here and now to acknowledge our architects, who had the patience and perspective to make it through our process, listening, helping us organize our patterns of use, bringing our wants in line with our needs and budget, and then creating a vision of both use and beauty. They are The Kubala Washatko Architects of Cedarburg, Wisconsin, and Vince Micha was the lead architect, and they deserve a great deal of credit and admiration. They have ours!
Finally, we also want to acknowlege our General Contractor, J.H. Findorff and Sons, Inc. They are a very skilled and expert group of craftsmen who did a wonderful job. Really nice folks, too. They have worked hard and cared a lot.
