There's no better way to make friends and connections at First Unitarian Society than joining a group. Check out the wide variety of options from which you can choose!
Alliance
The UU Alliance provides opportunities for friendship, personal and spiritual development, and service. It welcomes all women and men. Meetings are held at 1 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, September through May, with a summer picnic. Members share friendship at meals followed by programs of general interest. The UU Alliance of Madison is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation at the district and national levels. The Madison group was formed in 1884. A newsletter is published three times a year and is available in the Meeting House Lobby. The Madison Unitarian newsletter also reports upcoming program offerings. Contact: Joan Heitman, 829-2462, jaheitman@ tds.net.
Blood Donors’ Club
Members and friends of the three Madison UU congregations collectively pledge two aphaeresis or whole blood donations to the Red Cross each week. You can read donors’ names on the “One-A-Week” chart, periodically displayed. The club also sponsors two or three blood drives at UU churches each year, for which blood donors and other helpers are needed. For information, contact Mary Murphy, 233-8602, quiltedmary@yahoo.com, Anne Mosser, 845-7458, agmosser@ tds.net, or Gordon Cunningham,
230-3367.
The Fall Blood drive will be Saturday, September 4 8 am to noon in Courtyard Rooms ABC.
Caretakers’ Support Group
The Caretakers’ Support Group is a small support group for those who have responsibilities for taking care of loved ones. It is a quiet time to share the challenges and stresses as well as the joys of providing this care. We are in the process of reorganizing, so please contact Claire Box at clairebox1@mac.com if you are interested.
Friends of the Meeting House
Friends of the Meeting House were established to “restore and enhance the special architectural character of the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Meeting House of the First Unitarian Society.” Activities of the Friends include working actively to preserve and maintain the building and providing educational tours and programs for the community and area visitors. Contact: Richard Miller, richard_miller@tds.net, 238-2873
Grounds Crew
Grounds crew activities include weeding, pruning, planting, raking, prairie maintenance (depending on the level of interest of volunteers). Special cleanup projects may be announced through the newsletter. The gardening crew meets Thursday mornings 9-11am. To confirm dates and locations contact Nancy Ragland, at 249-9573 or nragland@charter.net .
Interest Groups
Interest Groups are made up of people who meet regularly for small group discussion, building community around a shared interest. Current groups include those discussing FUS sermons, Buddhism, business ethics, parenting or meditation.
If you would have an interest you would like to share, propose a new group by contacting Teresa Coffman teresa@aqdwr.org or Nancy Seaman nancy_seaman@sbcglobal.net, Interest Group coordinators. Groups meet regularly, usually once or twice a month, in members’ homes.
Updates about interest groups will be made available through the newsletter, information kiosk and at the Opportunity Fairs.
Men’s Issues
There are a variety of opportunities for men to explore issues important in their lives. On the first and third Mondays of the month, the “closed” men’s group meets. Men make these meetings a high priority. New members are welcomed in mid-September and again in mid-January. They are invited to make a commitment after they have attended three meetings. Contact: Neil Richardson, 260-8171, neilrich@polisci.wisc.edu. The Open Men’s Group provides an opportunity for men to come together to talk about their lives and to get to know one another on a deeper level than just casual acquaintance. Each meeting has an announced topic for discussion. New members are always welcome. This group meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Contact: Gordon Olson, olson99@tds.net, 836- 1779.
Partner Church
This committee is part of a national program linking Unitarian Universalist congregations in the United States and Canada with Unitarian and Universalist congregations around the world, primarily in Transylvania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, India, and the Philippines. Partner Church facilitates cultural and educational exchange, as well as financial support, between our congregation and our Partner Church in the Transylvanian village of Nagyajta. There are a variety of activities to help raise our awareness of the heritage we share with our religious kin around the world. The committee meets monthly throughout the year. Watch for the annual Hungarian Dinner on Friday, September 24! Contact: Marjorie Marion, 233-9104, midsi@aol.com.
