GLOBAL WARMING

Earth is our home. We are part of this world and its destiny is our own. Life on this planet will be gravely affected unless we embrace new practices, ethics, and values to guide our lives on a warming planet. As Unitarian Universalists, how can our faith inform our actions to remedy…global warming and climate change?

 Examples

1.  Replace 3 frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Save 300 lb. of carbon dioxide per year.  Don't forget to return used flourescent bulbs to a recognized recycler for safe disposal (any vendor should be able to accept your used bulbs).

2.  Keep tires on your car adequately inflated. Check them monthly. Save 250 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.

3.  Move your heater thermostat down two degrees in winter and up by two degrees in the summer. Save 2000 lbs. of carbon dioxide.

4.  Keep your water heater thermostat no higher than 120 degrees Farenheit. Save 500 lbs. of carbon dioxide per year.

5.  Emphasize local foods coming from within 100 miles of Madison in one or more additional meals per week.  See Green Living & Spirituality page.

6.  Commit to carpooling, riding the bus, walking or biking for two trips per week that you would normally have driven by yourself.   An individual switching to public transit can reduce his or her daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds; that’s more than 4,800 pounds in a year.
