Economic Justice Committee Volunteer Opportunities

FUS Volunteers are the heart and soul of our work.

1. Grace Episcopal Meals - FUS serves Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast to the men at the Grace Episcopal shelter one weekend per month. Volunteer responsibilities include purchasing and preparing food, transporting supplies to the Grace Episcopal Shelter site and serving the men. You can sign up as a group, or as an individual. The Shelter Meal Coordinator will pair up individuals with other FUS volunteers. Food purchases can be reimbursed through the shelter meals fund of the Economic Justice Committee, although many volunteers choose to donate the food.  Volunteers are needed for the August dinner!

Contact: Cathi Wiebrecht-Searer, 288-9972(dinner) or Anne Pryor, 244-7099 (breakfast)

2. IHN Buddy Church Volunteers - FUS serves as a buddy church for the Interfaith Hospitality Network in partnership with host church Christ Presbyterian. Our role is to support our host church as their ongoing partner. The host church provides IHN families shelter for a seven-day period (Sunday evening to Sunday morning) four times per year. We assist the host church in purchasing food and preparing meals for the families, offering evening activities (particularly for children), and providing overnight supervision. We also assist host church volunteers in setting up at the beginning of the week and taking down at the end of the week.  This is an ideal opportunity for families, existing groups at FUS, and for individuals.
Volunteer training is offered by IHN on an ongoing basis.  Excellent support is offered by our project coordinators Melanie Witte (overall program) and Luanne Storley (meal coordinator)

3. Second Chance Apartment Project Volunteers - FUS is currently working with our third family in the Second Chance program.  We provide two years of transitional housing, along with three mentors from the congregation. Volunteers will be needed. We are currently seeking mentors for our new family!  Mentors commit to two hours per week for up to two years. Other volunteer activities may include assisting the family in moving, collecting furniture or other items that the family needs.  Our current family includes four children ranging in age from 3 years to 15 years.  If you would like to contribute to a "fun package" for the family, please contact Wendy Cooper at FUS.  To learn more about mentoring, please contact Kendall Harrsion.
