The Meaning of Membership
Membership in the First Unitarian Society of Madison has two aspects: formal and participatory. Formal membership, achieved by signing the membership book and pledging financial support to the Society, gives you an "owner's" responsibility for the church, as well as a voice and a vote in congregational decision making. Participatory membership activates your own ongoing search for truth and your personal response to human need. (Affiliates are those who participate in our programs and who pledge support but who have not yet chosen to commit themselves to formal membership.)
Supporting First Unitarian Society Financially
The financial health of the Society rests solely with us: members, affiliates, and friends. No large endowments or gifts "in perpetuity" exist to keep us solvent if collections fall short. If you believe that our message of religious freedom, the beauty of our facilities, the value of our community and denominational outreach, and our commitment to a shared, caring ministry are worthy, please register your annual pledge of support. Three percent of gross income is the amount we often suggest, but some reach well beyond that level. Thoughtfully considered pledges of any amount are welcome.
Congregational Decision Making
Ours is a congregation that sets its own course. No bureaucracy or governing body external to the Society mandates policy or directs congregational action. The challenge and responsibility are ours to identify priorities, explore options for action, and move ahead to implement plans. The Society organizes its work through a network of committees, Councils (coordinating bodies for broader program areas), and an elected Board of Trustees. Several times each year, the full congregation meets to consider larger issues of parish mission and plans for the future, including the annual budget . . . and to share in a festive potluck!
Getting Involved
The Society welcomes your personal resources, gifts, interests, and vitality, as well as your financial resources. We offer a rich variety of opportunities for you to share the warmth of belonging to this religious community and the adventure of free and reasoned spiritual inquiry and expression.
