Making Connections
Welcome
On behalf of all of the congregation, welcome to the First Unitarian Society of Madison! Explore our beautiful facilities and the wide variety of programs that we offer in the liberal religious context. We hope you will find yourself at home in our community and that this sense of identification will grow as you become more involved.
If you are joining us as a member or affiliate, congratulations on your decision to become a part of the First Unitarian Society. The step you have taken in joining this religious community is a significant one, made for a complex of reasons. Some, doubtless, are intellectual: what we believe and what we do not. Some are emotional: feeling comfortable and at home in a particular institution. Others are a combination: finding a group of people with whom to share values and interests and goals.
For many, identifying with the Unitarian-Universalist movement itself is critical. Among spiritual forebears we proudly claim Thomas Jefferson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Dorothea Dix, Albert Schweitzer, Clara Barton, Susan B. Anthony, Whitney Young, May Sarton, and Olympia Brown (the first woman ordained in America, in 1863). Adlai Stevenson was one of our own; so is William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense in the Clinton Administration. Lesser known UUs, like most of us, have joined the movement to make a difference through a religious commitment to political activism, social reform, and intellectual integrity.
First Unitarian Society is a welcoming place for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons; persons of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds; and persons with disabilities.
Whatever your reasons for coming, we are glad to have you with us.
